About Steve

I have spent 30 years enjoying a challenging and rewarding career in education and training. After completing an apprenticeship at BAe and deciding that corporate life was not for me, I headed off to France and then India for three years voluntary work with young people with learning disabilities. Having got the bug for teaching and learning, I returned to the UK for an MEd in Special Education which led first to a social services department in Manchester and then by six years in an FE College working as a Welfare Officer and with international students.

In 1999, I was selected to be part of the team that started Blackpool’s first Key Stage 4 Pupil Referral Unit (PRU), and I worked in the PRU sector until July 2017. I qualified as a Youth Worker in 2001 and managing a PRU in Blackpool for four years. During this time, I developed a passion to bring informal educational perspectives to an increasingly formalised and rigid state education sector and applying these effectively to my subject teaching in PSHE, Citizenship, PE, & The Prince’s Trust, as well as to the pastoral care of our young people.

Since 2008, I have been delivering training, writing resources, doing life coaching and working with NLP while continuing to work part-time at in PRUs in Blackpool and Preston. I have spoken regularly at the National PRU Conference during this time, as well as training with staff teams in mainstream secondary schools and PRUs. I have also published two resource packs for use with young people.

My principal areas of interest are:

  • Designing and delivering accredited NLP courses
  • One to one Life Coaching
  • Hypnotherapy
  • Wellbeing of staff and service users
  • Adapting and using NLP in the public sector
  • Coaching in the classroom

The key to my approach to training is to offer material that is enjoyable and flexible to use, while delivering it in a way that engages and challenges staff to get back to their workplaces to try it out. This interactive approach involves staff trying out techniques and leaving training with the information and resources to develop the techniques into skills and competencies. I blend experience and expertise in NLP, Life Coaching, Positive Psychology and in informal, experiential education to offer some new and different perspectives for our work with young people and service users.

As part of this development I founded a Community Interest Company, Think Forward. (thinkforwardcic.co.uk) with two colleagues in 2011. We provide high quality training and CPD to those working with young people. We do this through our work with the Arts Award, training youth workers and groups of young people. We also work closely with European partners through the Erasmus+ programme. This has taken us into many innovative projects including developing a Europe-wide on-line learning badge platform, training programmes for youth workers and coach training projects across the EU.
